Becoming a lifeguard
Becoming a lifeguard is a route to a fulfilling job that could lead to you saving someone’s life one day.
Lifeguards are an integral part of the staff teams at our leisure centres. They keep an eye on everything happening from their position and are qualified to intervene if a person is in trouble.
Following successful completion of the course you will be qualified to work as a lifeguard. Hambleton District Council is often recruiting for staff for full time job opportunities visit our jobs page, or for part time vacancies please contact your local leisure centre.
For many, becoming a lifeguard provides an excellent foundation for a career in the leisure industry.
About our courses
All courses include elements of wet and dry work, the dry side work is focused around the role of a lifeguard, and first aid and CPR. The Water work includes how to undertake rescues both Individually and as part of a team.
You will need to bring your swim wear and a t-shirt to wear in the water as well as some food to eat at break/lunch time. Please wear comfortable clothes as the course requires a lot of practical work!
The course cost £250 per candidate, these costs includes training of defibrillator and and all assessment fees.
100% attendance is required to be able to undertake the assessment.
Prerequisites
All candidates must be:
- aged 16 on the day of the assessment
- able to swim 50 meters in less that 60 seconds
- able to touch the bottom of the pool
- able to climb out of the pool unaided
