Leisure Centre upgrade approved
A £314,000 upgrade for Bedale Leisure Centre has been given the go ahead.
The scheme – approved by members of Hambleton District Council today (September 15) – will see a new 30 station gym provided, 20 indoor cycling bikes installed and the reception and foyer area revamped.
It is one of six schemes to be earmarked for cash from the council’s Community Investment Levy (CIL) pot. The cash is collected from developers to fund new infrastructure in the district. Since 2015 almost £606,000 has been given to town and parish councils to spend on local schemes.
Members were told that currently £4,229,615 is available – of which £2 million has been promised for the new North Northallerton Primary School, £200,000 for the Stokesley 3G pitch and £210,000 for the Stokesley School sports hall.
They agreed that all CIL money collected until March 31 next year (2021) will be allocated to four schemes: Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre improvements – 50% of the total pot; Sowerby Sports Village – 25%; North Northallerton Sports Village – 15%; and Bedale Leisure Centre – 10%.
“These are projects of strategic and local importance which contribute to the council’s aims and objectives,” said Council Leader, Councillor Mark Robson.
“It is important that CIL money goes to improve the infrastructure needed as a result of new developments and along with the drive to improve health and well being following the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic they meet these criteria.
“We intend to see CIL money allocated to develop sports, recreation and leisure facilities across our district."
